Gordon MP Malcolm Bruce today urged local students to fill in a council tax exemption certificate. Properties occupied solely by students are not required to pay council tax however each occupant is obliged to fill an application for exemption with proof of their status as a student.
Speaking from his constituency office today, Mr Bruce said:
"At this time of year many students are moving off to University or College for the first time and often do not realise that qualification for council tax exemption is not automatic - an application by each resident of a property, which must include proof of student status, is required before an exemption can be granted."
"Every year I hear from students who have had a nasty shock when they are informed by the council that, because an exemption form was never submitted, they are still liable for the Council Tax Bill."
Mr Bruce continued:
"I realise this is a busy time in the student calendar but I would urge people to set aside some time during fresher's week to get this sorted out as it can often prove to be an expensive oversight."
