Gordon Liberal Democrat MP Malcolm Bruce has written to the Scottish Minister for Sport, Patricia Fergusson, calling on the Scottish Executive to give adequate financial backing for plans for a 50 metre swimming pool in the North East of Scotland.
Commenting Malcolm Bruce said:
"The Scottish Executive has acknowledged that there is a need for a 50m swimming pool in Aberdeen however I am disappointed sufficient funding has not been awarded to enable the project to go ahead.
"Aberdeen City Council has estimated the cost of building a new 50 metre swimming pool at between £10 and £12 million which I understand is based on advice from sportscotland. In this context, the maximum grant of £500,000 is a drop in the ocean as there is little chance of Aberdeen City Council finding the extra £10 million required.
"With the four other 50m swimming pools in Scotland based in Edinburgh, Glasgow, East Kilbride and Stirling inaccessible to swimmers in the North East, I am urging the Minister for Sport to reconsider this decision."
