Local MP Marks National Will Week

October 24, 2006 12:00 AM

During National Will Week, local MP Malcolm Bruce is calling on all his constituents to make sure they have an up-to-date Will.

This week (23rd October), National Will Week aims to highlight the importance of having a Will and the potential consequences of dying intestate. A recent survey conducted for the event shows that over two thirds of people do not have an up-to-date Will. Most people say they simply have not got around to writing one.

Mr Bruce remarked:

"Nobody should be without a Will as it is the only guaranteed way of ensuring that your wishes will be met.

"Unmarried couples have no automatic right to inherit if there is no Will, and even married couples can only automatically inherit up to certain financial limits set down by law. It is also very important to make provision for the financial security and guardianship of your children. In short, it is essential to have an up-to-date Will."

Mr Bruce is also asking his constituents who wish to make a Will to consider taking advantage of November's Will Aid campaign, which encourages people to make a Will and at the same time to raise vital funds for charity.

The Will Aid campaign puts people in touch with a local solicitor who is prepared to waive their fee and instead request that a donation be given to the Will Aid charities. To find out more information on the campaign, anyone can call the Campaign Office on 01460 271 178 or visit www.willaid.org.uk

to find out which local solicitors are participating."

If you are a resident of the Gordon constituency and are writing to discuss any issue that Parliament or government is responsible for, you must provide your home address as MPs are generally only permitted to act on behalf of constituents.

If you are not a constituent, you do not need to provide your address, but the matters we can deal with are more limited and you may wish to contact your local MP in the first instance.
