Bruce Calls for Improved North East Sports Facilities

A 50m pool is needed in NE Scotland

Malcolm Bruce MP has long called for the improvement of sporting facilities in North East Scotland

Gordon MP Malcolm Bruce has urged the newly elected Scottish Executive to support the building of a new generation of sports facilities in the North East.

Mr Bruce has written to the Minister for Communities and Sport, Stuart Maxwell MSP to seek his support.

The Liberal Democrat MP said:

"I have long called for the construction of a 50-metre swimming pool in Aberdeen. This project now has the support of Aberdeen City Council and Aberdeen University."

"However, their vision will not be realised if the Scottish Executive does not provide the Council with the necessary financial backing."

Mr Bruce has also drawn attention to the lack of gymnastics provision in the North East of Scotland. Commenting, he said:

"I am pleased to hear that Bon Accord Gymnastics Club may have found a temporary home."

"However, gymnastics in the North East deserves a permanent facility - and deserves the active support of the Executive to fund it."

The Gordon MP continued,

"The North East has several youngsters that have the potential to reach Olympic standards. In Hannah Miley, it already has a world class swimmer, a gold medallist, and a British record holder."

"The call for a Scottish Olympic team, and the backing of Glasgow's Commonwealth Games bid, will mean little if we do not use this opportunity to provide a lasting legacy for future generations. "

If you are a resident of the Gordon constituency and are writing to discuss any issue that Parliament or government is responsible for, you must provide your home address as MPs are generally only permitted to act on behalf of constituents.

If you are not a constituent, you do not need to provide your address, but the matters we can deal with are more limited and you may wish to contact your local MP in the first instance.
