MP welcomes simpler rail fares but questions value for money

April 28, 2008 7:00 PM

Malcolm Bruce MP today welcomed moves by the Association of Train Operating Companies (ATOC) to make rail fares simpler but expressed concern that fares should not become even less affordable.

The MP for Gordon who raised the issue of cheaper and simpler rail ticketing earlier this year in the House of Commons said:

"Anyone who has tried to buy rail tickets for themselves or their family on the internet will have been struck by the complicated and frustrating booking method with up to 12 ticket types available. Thankfully we will no longer have to wonder what the differences between a 'saver', 'supersaver', 'leisure advance' or an 'apex' tickets are.

"While this simplification is welcome, I hope the train operators will not see this as an opportunity to scrap those fares which are cheaper by the back-door."

If you are a resident of the Gordon constituency and are writing to discuss any issue that Parliament or government is responsible for, you must provide your home address as MPs are generally only permitted to act on behalf of constituents.

If you are not a constituent, you do not need to provide your address, but the matters we can deal with are more limited and you may wish to contact your local MP in the first instance.
