The Gordon MP Malcolm Bruce has called on the Government to offer assurances to the oil and gas industry in the North Sea in light of the impending strike at the Grangemouth oil refinery.
In a statement to the House of Commons today, the Secretary of State for Business and Enterprise gave assurances that the industrial action would not affect access to fuel supplies in Scotland. While welcoming these assurances, Mr Bruce highlighted concerns on the potential knock on effect on oil and gas workers in the North Sea in terms of production and health and safety.
Mr Bruce said:
"I welcome the Secretary of State's assurances about supplies, but forecourt owners and managers must act responsibly and inform their customers that they can secure future supplies and manage them sensibly?
"I am however concerned about the implications of the dispute for the security and continuity of production in the North Sea. Many of my constituents, who work in the North Sea, will fear that a dispute downstream could threaten their livelihoods and their long-term future in upstream activity.
"Can the Secretary of State assure us that he will investigate thoroughly the integrity of the system downstream and upstream, to ensure that no dispute of this kind can cause serious long-term damage to production capacity and delivery in the North sea and the future employment of people whose livelihoods depend on it?"
