Before the announcement, Malcolm spoke to many local post offices, here at Esslemont Circle with MSP Alison McInnes
Following the release of the Post Office's restructuring proposals for the North East, Tayside and Fife region today, Gordon MP, Malcolm Bruce is seeking the public's comments on the hours changes to the four villages affected in the Gordon constituency.
The announcement today marks the start of a six week consultation period and the four post offices concerned in Rhynie, Lumsden, Kennethmont and Collieston will see a big reduction in the hours of service according to the proposals, although all four branches will remain open for the foreseeable future.
Following the announcement Mr Bruce said:
"I have already met with Royal Mail to hear the details of their proposals for Gordon and I have been in touch with the sub post mistresses affected.
"The Government's policy up to now has effectively chipped away at the viability of local post office businesses. As a direct result we now face a wide-scale, national programme of closures.
He continued:
"While I am relieved that -aside from the Montgarrie branch which had already closed- there are no new closures announced for the Gordon constituency, I understand there will be obvious disappointment in the communities of Rhynie, Lumsden, Kennethmont and Collieston who face a much reduced service. For those post offices with a small business attached, there will be further concerns about the drop in income that these changes will have.
"The reality is that the Government's programme is well underway and experience is showing in other parts of the country that if one post office is saved another will have to go. However, I am taking soundings from the villages concerned and shall explore the option of organising public meetings if people think this would be helpful."
