Commenting on the election of Barack Obama as President of the USA, Gordon Liberal Democrat MP, Malcolm Bruce, who chairs the House of Commons International Development Committee said:
"Much of the world will be cheered by American voters' decision to give a strong mandate to Barack Obama. One of the symptoms of change which could be ushered in by President Obama is a new relationship with developing countries.
"The USA is the world's largest aid donor but aid often comes with political strings attached. With his African connections and a desire for a change in America's relationship with the rest of the world Mr Obama has the chance to promote political and diplomatic solutions to conflict and to provide development aid to meet the needs of poor people in the recipient countries.
"The fact that the USA no longer insists on the right to appoint the President of the World Bank is a positive step which must not be compromised by politically tied bilateral aid or a return to protectionism that restricts the trade potential of developing countries."
