Sir Robert Smith, MP for West Aberdeenshire and Kincardine, and Malcolm Bruce, MP for Gordon, have called for a meeting with the new department for energy to raise concerns about household without access to the gas network.
Households off the gas mains are more likely to be in fuel poverty, and have to rely on expensive domestic heating oil and LPG to heat their homes. After raising the problem in Parliament last week, the Liberal Democrat MPs have written to Ed Miliband, Secretary of State at the Department for Energy and Climate Change to meet with him and explain the problem in depth.
Fuel Poverty Remains Important Issue
Commenting, Sir Robert said:
"This winter many constituents will face a serious challenge in keeping warm. They do not have access to mains gas and have to rely on expensive alternatives that are not governed by the energy market regulator.
"I would welcome an early meeting with the minister as it is clear from our exchanges in Parliament that this issue needs to be a high priority in his new job."
Malcolm Bruce added:
"Across the constituency, worried residents tell us that high heating oil prices are impacting heavily on their household bills. Their concern is that the current trend of lower oil prices will not be passed on and they will not be able to reap the benefits as quickly as they had hoped.
"A meeting with the Secretary of State would provide a valuable opportunity to discuss the full impact that these high prices are having on people across Aberdeenshire and to discuss what role the Government can take to assist those concerned."
