Gordon MP Malcolm Bruce has told of his frustration and disappointment over the uncertain future facing Udny Station post office near Ellon and is calling on the Royal Mail to make every effort to keep it open.
Post Office Closures
The MP has written to Post Office officials following the announcement that Udny Station will face temporary closure from 17 November due to the retirement of the current subpostmistress and the loss of the premises. Mr Bruce fears that the closure could become permanent.
In his letter Mr Bruce said:
"Earlier this year, during the consultation as part of the rural restructuring programme, I was made aware of the current subpostmistress's intention to retire. My understanding is the Post Office was also fully aware that this was the situation and appears not to have taken action.
"There is a feeling that this temporary closure will lead to a permanent one and will effectively be an additional closure by the back door."
Mr Bruce added:
"Given that the Post Office did not recommend Udny Station for closure in the recent review I call on the Royal Mail to make every effort to ensure that the part-time service continues otherwise local residents from Udny Station will face a journey of at least two miles to the next nearest branch."
