Malcolm Bruce, the MP for Gordon is reminding constituents to use the special advice line offered by the Scottish Consumer Council if they receive poor service or faulty goods over the festive period.
The MP urged Aberdeenshire residents to use the Consumer Direct Scotland hotline on 08454 04 05 06 as the first point of contact for consumers with any complaints.
Commenting Mr Bruce said:
"Although it is the last thing that people will want to think about over the festive period, it is important that consumers know where to turn if they fall victim to bad service or shoddy goods from companies.
"It is important however to differentiate between faulty goods and unwanted goods when assessing your rights but if you do have a faulty good that needs returning, people should know that the responsibility lies with the retailer and not the manufacturer so don't allow yourself to be fobbed off. Also when proof of purchase is required, although a receipt is the most convenient form of proof, it might be worthwhile considering other forms such as a credit card statement for example."
The MP added:
"Consumer Direct offers first-line advice to consumers but it is also there to assist local authorities to meet their objectives. Much of the information supplied by the public via Consumer Direct is passed on to local Trading Standards Officers, who can then investigate scams and rogue practices which undermine consumer and business confidence."
