Malcolm introduced the School Bus (Safety) Bill to parliament.

Gordon MP Malcolm Bruce is today presenting a Bill in Parliament calling for the law to be toughened on school bus safety.

The MP has the backing of other MPs from across the political spectrum who agree it should be illegal for vehicles to overtake a stationary school bus. The Bill also calls for safety training of drivers and pupils and for buses to display prominent signs alerting other drivers that they are transporting school pupils.

Mr Bruce said:

"Following consultation with safety experts and campaigners on this issue, I am pleased to be putting before Parliament this Bill which will I hope will stimulate debate on this important issue and force the Government to re-examine its position on preventing vehicles from overtaking stationery school buses."

"Too many school children have been involved in tragic accidents that could have been avoided if better measures had been in place and I am pleased to have the support of Parliamentarians from across the political spectrum who back the need for change.

"After presenting my Bill to Parliament, I will be seeking the support of other MPs in pressurising the Government into take action."

The other supporting Members of Parliament include: David Blunkett MP (Lab), Peter Bottomley (Con) and fellow North East MPs Sir Robert Smith MP (LD) and Anne Begg MP (Lab).

If you are a resident of the Gordon constituency and are writing to discuss any issue that Parliament or government is responsible for, you must provide your home address as MPs are generally only permitted to act on behalf of constituents.

If you are not a constituent, you do not need to provide your address, but the matters we can deal with are more limited and you may wish to contact your local MP in the first instance.
