Commenting on the decision by Home Secretary Alan Johnson MP to drop plans making ID cards compulsory for pilots and airport workers, Malcolm Bruce the MP for Aberdeen Airport in Dyce welcomed the U-turn.
Mr Bruce said:
"Although this scheme was initially being piloted at Manchester and London City airports, I am sure airport workers in Aberdeen airport will be relieved at this decision which threatened to penalise airside workers and pilots needlessly.
"This is yet another nail in the coffin for the expensive national ID card scheme. The evidence shows that ID cards will be ineffective at tackling terrorism and identity fraud. The Government has run out of excuses and needs to axe this illiberal, controversial and wholly unpopular scheme altogether."
