MP congratulates new Speaker of House of Commons

Malcolm Bruce, the MP for Gordon has congratulated the new Speaker of the House of Commons John Bercow.

Speaker Bercow was 'dragged to the Speaker's chair' as tradition requires on Monday night by MPs before being confirmed in his appointment.

The Gordon MP, who was one of Mr Bercow's original nominees, said that the new Speaker had an important task ahead in order to help restore public confidence in Parliament and help reform it to make it more representative and efficient.

Mr Bruce said:

"I know John Bercow well and am delighted he has won the race to be the new Speaker.

"The Speaker needs to fulfil a role to restore the confidence of the House of Commons in itself and for that he needs a good connection with the public as Parliament's ambassador.

"I'm confident that with his energy, enthusiasm and experience John is the right man for the job."
