Liberal Democrat MP for Gordon, Malcolm Bruce, has congratulated local subpostmaster George Stephen who is celebrating ten years in charge at Udny Post Office.

On a recent visit to Udny Post Office, Mr Bruce presented Mr Stephen with an award from Paula Vennells, Managing Director of the Post Office in recognition of his service.

Afterwards, Mr Bruce commented:

"I am delighted to help George celebrate a decade of loyal service as the subpostmaster at Udny Post Office. It is always a pleasure to stop by when I am travelling around the constituency to see George and his wife Danuta and I know that many local residents will feel the same way.

"George's hard work is helping to ensure that post offices like that in Udny continue to play a vital role at the heart of our rural communities. After two closure programmes in a decade that led to the closure of 5,000 branches, I am pleased that the Coalition Government is actively supporting subpostmasters, employees and communities by guaranteeing the future of the rural post office network, examining how they can open up new revenue streams and provide additional services.

"This milestone represents a great achievement and is testament to George's dedication and friendly character. I wish him and the Udny Post Office continued success in the years ahead."

Mr Stephen added:

"I have enjoyed the past ten years and would like to thank our customers for their continued support.

"One of my proudest moments was in 2009 when our small post office was selected as one of the 5 finalists for the Scottish Region in the 'Best Post Office' category of the 'People's Post Office Awards'. It was nice to know our efforts were appreciated by our customers who nominated us for this award."
