Biography

Having fought the North Angus and Mearns seat in October 1974, and West Aberdeenshire in May 1979, Malcolm was elected MP for Gordon in June 1983.

Malcolm joined the Liberal Party at the age of 17 and was President of the Liberal Club at St. Andrews. He went on to do an MSc in Marketing at Strathclyde University. In 1995, he was called to the bar (Gray's Inn). He went on to establish Aberdeen Petroleum Publishing, with a partner, in 1981.

Malcolm is the author of pamphlets on energy and rural development and was, from February 1986 - February 1989, Rector of Dundee University. He is President of the Grampian Branch and a National Vice President of the National Deaf Children's Society, and a Vice President of the Combined Heat & Power Association. Malcolm is also a former President and current Vice-President of GLOBE International (Global Legislators Organisation for a Balanced Environment).

In the last Parliament (2005-10) Malcolm chaired the influential International Development Select Committee. He is a former leader of the Scottish Liberal Democrats and is now President of the Scottish Party. Malcolm has held a number of high profile Party spokesmanships including Trade and Industry, Environment, Food and Rural Affairs and Treasury. He has also been a member of the Scottish Affairs Select Committee, the Trade and Industry Select Committee, the Committee for Standards and Privileges and the Treasury Select Committee. He was made a Privy Councillor in 2006 by invitation of Her Majesty the Queen.

My contract with the constituents of Gordon

As your elected MP, I pledge to serve the people of Gordon and I will put local people first. I will be there to help, listen to your concerns and stand up for our community without fear or favour. My office will always be available five days a week, and I will hold regular and easily accessible surgeries. I will report back on what I am doing on your behalf, and meet regularly with local service providers like the police, health services and residents' groups.

I will make sure your voice is heard - throughout the North East and at Westminster. I will be a strong voice for Gordon. I will: campaign energetically on your behalf and fight for the fair deal that the North East deserves at Westminster. And I will always say what I think is deliverable - I don't believe in making promises that can't be kept.

I will be open and honest about all expenses incurred in representing you. I will answer questions you may have about them promptly.

If you are a resident of the Gordon constituency and are writing to discuss any issue that Parliament or government is responsible for, you must provide your home address as MPs are generally only permitted to act on behalf of constituents.

If you are not a constituent, you do not need to provide your address, but the matters we can deal with are more limited and you may wish to contact your local MP in the first instance.
